Michigan Needs Labor and Business Cooperation in 2012

As I said in a 9/3/2012 blog post, I'm appreciative of the benefits that I received through my parents' membership in labor unions. When my Mom worked for Michigan Bell, she was a member of the Communication Workers of America. During part of my Dad's time at Michigan State University, he was a member of AFSCME.

Unlike many other Republicans, I oppose enacting Right-to-Work legislation here in Michigan. But, I also oppose passage of Proposal 2 that will appear on the November 2012 ballot here in Michigan.

I believe Detroit Free Press Columnist Brian Dickerson said it best on 10/18/2012...
...As it stands, whatever happens on Nov. 6 seems certain to destroy the fragile détente Michigan's employers and organized labor have established. If Proposal 2 passes, state agencies and municipalities striving to meet residents' needs with ever diminishing resources will face new obstacles to governing. If it's defeated, Snyder may lack the will or the political capital to stop a Wisconsin-style assault on collective bargaining rights. And it's a pity, because all most Michiganders really want is to live in a state where neither side has the option of running roughshod over the other.
