Check out the email below that I received today from The University Bookman...
Dear Reader,The University Bookman is a publication of the Russell Kirk Center for Cultural Renewal. http://kirkcenter.org/bookman
Happy Halloween! As Hurricane Sandy recedes from the East Coast, we are reminded of the great powers in the world that exist apart from human agency. Russell Kirk, a great friend of the natural world, was also attuned to those supernatural powers that suffuse our world, perhaps no more so than on Halloween, one of his favorite holidays. Those who witnessed Kirk telling a ghost story, late at night in the dark at Piety Hill, did not soon forget the experience.
In commemoration of his skill as a master story-teller of the specular and spooky, Ashlee Cowles reviews Kirk’s classic, LORD OF THE HOLLOW DARK. From our archives, you can also read science-fiction master Jerry Pournelle’s review of PRINCESS OF ALL LANDS, R. Andrew Newman’s review of the Ash-Tree Press collection of Kirk’s ghostly tales, and Kirk’s own explanation of the importance of the classic ghost story, “A Cautionary Note on the Ghostly Tale” (all gathered at http://j.mp/SxdkZ9).
Of course, the Bookman has had more than spooky tales in its pages of late, including Enoch Powell at 100, reflections on the work of Henry Sumner Maine and James Stephens, a look at a new biography of John Randolph of Roanoke, and a conversation with the Booker-shortlisted author, Will Self.
