Troy Library - Letter to the Editor

Below is my "letter to the editor" that appeared in today's Oakland Press. (The newspaper staff selected the heading Is Troy library a political football?)

Is Troy library a political football?

On Aug. 2, Troy citizens will have the opportunity to approve a 0.7 millage to fund our library.

Most Troy citizens want to maintain the library. The difference of opinion is whether a tax increase for the library is needed. Those supporting a “yes” vote believe that the city does not currently have enough funds to maintain the library. Those supporting a “no” vote believe that those funds are available. Who can the average voter trust?

Unfortunately, funding for the Troy library has become a political football

Fortunately, voters have the power to end this game by approving a designated tax source to keep our library open. Yes, a tax increase of any type is not welcome in today’s economic environment. However this dedicated tax will not fund a luxury library, but it will maintain an affordable economy model. It will be a tax to support our library and benefit our community.

Troy voters will also vote in November to elect a mayor and council members. Those officials will then have the opportunity to identify cost-savings in the budget for essential municipal services.
