Memorial Day 2010 and the "Polar Bears"

To pay respects to fallen U.S. military veterans, the Lambert Family attended a Memorial Day Ceremony at the World War I Polar Bear Memorial at White Chapel Cemetery here in Troy.

What is the Polar Bear Memorial? It is dedicated to honoring and maintaining the memory of the 339th Infantry Regiment, the 1st Battalion of the 310th Engineers, the 337th Ambulance Co. and the 337th Field Hospital of the U.S. Army's 85th Division. These men, officially designated the American North Russian Expeditionary Force and also known as "Detroit's Own" and "Polar Bears", were sent by President Wilson to North Russia where they fought the Bolshevik Red Army from September 1918 through June 1919.

Here's the Memorial at today's ceremony.

There's even a documentary film on the Polar Bears called "Voices of a Never Ending Dawn."  Pamela Peak, the film's producer/director, was also at today's ceremony. She's pictured below.

Dave, I am glad you went to see this. I went the year someone told me
no official person from city hall ever came to their program. I got
Matt as Mayor to go and he gave such a wonderful speech. Iva was a little girl when her parents took her to White chapel to see the boxes
with all the bodies in them and that where they were going to be
burried. Martin went as councilman the next year and they were so
happy to have someone from the city come. No one has gone since.
But it is a nice show they put on. Thanks for going this year.
